Me, Olli
The universe had proven to be a harsher and colder and more dangerous place than I had believed. The technological singularity via artificial intelligence is underway, humanity unprepared, with a high risk of causing human extinction. Already it’s clear the world will be very, very different, soon.
I’ve radically updated my beliefs, in these past few years. My previous life plans – to the extent I had them – were predicated on falsehoods about the future, about society, about progress. Many of my aspirations did not persist, for the truth could and did destroy them.
Monin tavoin suhtauduin asioihin kevyesti. En pyrkinyt vakavasti optimoimaan tekstieni laatua tai levikkiä, vaan mielsin kirjoittamisen vain harrastuksena, jonka sivuvaikutuksena voisi oppia jotakin hyödyllistä.
The Pareto frontiers are steeper than I had hoped.
There is no guarantee that the best place for work is the same as where you started living or where your social life is rooted. In my case it indeed isn’t. And there was no half-way compromise: it’s not like there’s a city in the world that’s 90% as good for my work output, and 90% as good for my social life and other wants. You pick one or the other.
I could have stayed in Espoo, where there were forests and sea and modern city design. But not really. How could I simply stand by as the singularity is unfolding? It felt stagnating. I want to – need to – keep up, to adapt, to become adaptive, lest I lose what I value.
I moved to London for a job.
I may not be interested in economics, but economics is interested in me. Aesthetically pleasing or not, there’s only limited deviation I can afford.
It so seems that, as with many things, the value of output by cognitive workers is fat-tailed. It similarly seems that one’s probability of becoming a top performer grows superlinearly with the amount of time and effort one puts in. Hence, sharply increasing returns to marginal effort, and it makes sense for me to go hard or not go at all.
The value of output from various activities is similarly fat-tailed, and by the nature of professional specialisation, my work output is vastly more valuable than anything I produce in my free time. To first approximation, any leisure activities are valuable insofar as they enable more or better professional work now or later.
Olen alkanut suhtautua kirjoittamiseen vakavammin, tavoitteellisemmin ja instrumentaalisemmin. Jatkan jongleeraamista, ehkä osittain sen tarjoamien fyysisten hyötyjen vuoksi. Pyrin käyttämään aikaani harkitummin.
It makes sense for me to continue down this path. After all, I am relatively very well positioned to become adaptive, due to many factors not of my making, and it makes sense for me to work most in such worlds. I’ll do it so that others don’t have to.
I can try to take comfort in the hope that, in the counterfactuals where I was less fit to do so and others more, they would similarly have risen up to adapt to protect me and everyone. And, perhaps, in the best-case scenarios, humanity and its descendants will coordinate to retroactively reward those who did good in the past.
The tradeoffs will only get more divisive as the singularity approaches. What will I do as opportunities for cognitive enhancement pop up? Taking them might make me slightly less compatible with the majority who won’t, at least not as fast or to the same extent, but how could I pass? What will I do when it’s feasible to become truly transhuman? Will I have to leave behind anyone who hesitates?
Will there ever be a good time to retire? What if the notion of a universe in equilibrium is incoherent, and in truth one needs to do perpetual steering to ensure good outcomes? Can that task truly be delegated, or would there always be use for me personally to work on it, copies notwithstanding? Will summer ever come?
And if it finally does, who will be there to enjoy it?
